"Seriously??"That was my first thought when hearing that Milwaukee will soon have a statue of Bud Selig towering outside of Miller Park with impressive grandeur.
"Doesn't Milwaukee have a player (Molitor, Gorman Thomas?), bench coach, Bernie Brewer, a ball boy...anybody...more deserving of a statue?"
That was my second thought.
I have a hard time believing that even Milwaukee fans are that excited about Bud, let alone a slightly less animated replica of him. Perhaps he is much more loved by Brewers fans than I realize...it is just a bit odd, don't you think? Generally the unveiling of a statue should be met with "It's about time", not "Those crazy Onion writers..."
Perhaps the oddest part for me is trying to imagine what inspiring or memorable "pose" Bud will be in...maybe they could put an MGD in his hand or a cheesehead on top...or even announcing the cancellation of the '94 World Series. After finding several pictures online of Bud with his hand up to his ear I am led to believe that is his trademark "move". (Does anyone know if he is hard of hearing?) More likely it will be Bud in his bespectacled glory, dressed in a fine suit and goofy grin. Stunning addition to the ballpark landscape.
I agree with Jim Caple's assessment...statues are for players and maybe the team's radio voice, not an owner (or commissioner).
By the way, doesn't Bernie Brewer look eerily like Robin Yount?
